Halloween Boo Boos

Posted by Jen

Some questions are easy to answer.

"Cake, or DEATH?"

"Uh...cake, please."

Others can be a little more tricky:

"Trick, or TROAT?"

"And this is for 'Hallowen,' so, be honest."

Here's a moving Halloween vignette:

Judging by the pile behind it, I guess we have to assume that's "Poop in Peace."

(Which, come to think of it, is probably what every parent of a two to six-year-old dreams of doing.)

Jack O' Lanterns:

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

Sperm Bullies:

YOU PRETTY MUCH NAILED IT.

I can't decide if these two are hanging garland or just have massive orthodontist bills:

Boo? Boo?! YOU TAKE THAT BACK!

Thank you.

Thanks to Porter N., Rane L., Katya H., Lisa S., Laura W., & Destiny G., who think that last one is pretty yracs.

P.S. You know how everyone is decorating with these cute wall bats for spooky season?

Well I found them on Amazon! They're re-usable PVC - so weatherproof - and cost less than $10 for a pack of 56. While you're there I highly recommend scrolling the customer image gallery, too, for cute decorating ideas like this.

TaTa Tragedies

Posted by Jen

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, bakers, which means it's time to slap pink icing ribbons on everything, including last month's leftover cookies:

Pro Tip: When licking icing off your display cookies, try to be more thorough. Otherwise people might start asking questions.

It also means that every October birthday is no longer just a birthday:

It's a "Flappy Beiast Awaranistsy" Birthday!

Plus, what better time is there to break out the ol' "Ring o' Stomachs" icing border?

NO TIME, that's when.

Of course, since even the simple ribbon loop is beyond many bakers' skill set, you might want to cheat a bit by using candy molds:

Pro Tip: these also work great for bachelorette parties.

Or maybe stick to a single ribbon and just one misspelled word:

G, I admire your restraint.

Or how about a simple, inspiring inscription? You know, something about hope, and strength, and working towards a cure?

Or a confusingly depressing sentiment that makes less and less sense the more you think about it?

Because when I remember a painful loss, the first thing I want to do - I mean, AFTER celebrating the fact that I just remembered my painful loss - is eat a giant cookie cake.

[sigh]

Tell you what, bakers, maybe we should just go back to the ribbons.

Perfect.

Thanks to Sarah A., Gia E., Crystal A., Jen P., Anony M., Michelle T., & Leslie P. for keeping us abreast of the situation. TTFN, ladies!

*****

P.S. Want to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness in the spirit of the spooky season? Then allow me to present the greatest October t-shirt of all time:

"Boo Bees" T-Shirt

More colors and cuts at the link, though sadly it does NOT come in pink. BOO.

Nothing of import from yesterday. I am home tonight and I have BIG PLANS!!

Do I remember what those plans are? Listen, don't trouble me with specifics, the plans are big! the biggest! You don't even know how big! (No, no I don't.)

Definitely need to make dinner, but besides that, the world is my oyster. I woke up really really anxious for no real reason (lies, I am back at my regular desk today and I really don't want to be in such close proximity to my two ranty coworkers) so I plan to relax hard later. Still gonna yell at myself about how I need to get on this sewing kick, the weather has been quite chilly lately, I need more tops to wear that are seasonally appropriate!

Ok, first order of business will be printing new patterns. Then we'll see.

Also, third box bug found last night, which may or may not have been the same one I smashed the day before. It was on the floor and seemed to be struggling. I'm gonna count it as a new one though.

Another good speech therapy session for Kate. She showed off her new phrases, and the therapist was very pleased with her progress. We discussed doing an official reassessment in January, since that will be about 6 months from when she was enrolled, and if she's caught up, then she could be taken out of the program. Huzzah!

M had a meeting during the second half of the session, and when he was finished had some annoying news - his one-day trip to Dallas for work has turned into a 2-day trip. So, we had to reschedule the sonogram for the following week, and I'm going to have to finagle a couple more hours of time so I can take the day off, which means coming in early for a couple days to accrue some flex time. ~sigh~ Annoying, but what can you do. Hopefully they don't give him any more travel assignments before I have some PTO saved up again, because after this trip, I'll be completely out.

Dinner was a frozen cheese pizza, which I shared with Kate, who was not satisfied with her own plate of food and just kept coming over to mine and stealing bites from it. So, she just ended up with her own slice.

Bedtime was a struggle because she kept taking off her clothes and crawling under her mattress. -_- She finally went down at around 9:30, at which point I was so exhausted from getting up so early (Kate had woken up at 6AM, which means I was up, too, after having fallen asleep too late) and having many nights recently of not being able to sleep well. I was nearly in tears I was so tired, but she finally got to sleep, I had myself an ice cream sandwich, and once I was sure she was asleep, I crawled into bed myself.

Slept like the dead, hit snooze too many times this morning, slightly behind on everything, but c'est la vie.

M's flight is at 9pm tonight, and he has a friend taking him to the airport. I'm hoping to squeeze in a grocery run this afternoon before he goes so we're stocked up and I don't have to shop while he's away.

Looking very forward to being able to put Kate to bed in her own room for the rest of the week so I can enjoy my own bedroom without tiptoeing through the dark! I'm going to try and get her into a more set routine, not letting her sleep in as late (M lets her sleep in until she wakes up on her own, which is usually around 9:30! The luxury!) so she doesn't stay up as late. She seems to have a pretty set 12-hour schedule - whenever she wakes up in the morning, she'll go to bed at the opposite hour in the evening - so if I can get her up by 7:30 or 8, then she should go to bed at the same evening time. Hopefully we can both stick to that. XP

OG Scream was FANTASTIC, it hits a little different on a big screen, and the audience was super responsive. There was lots of yelling and laughter and it was a pretty full house. We had so much fun.

Friday I got home and the power was out. Turns out that the guys doing the alley work hit a pole not terribly far from where I am in the complex. My collection of candles finally came in handy! For all the good it did, which wasn't a ton... One candle burned brightly, the other two struggled, and they were all scented which played havoc on my sinuses.

Woke up at 12:45 ish and the power was back on, plus my phone had died. When I woke up again around 7-something, my friends were no longer leaving town as Nicole was very ill, so I didn't need to come puppy sit. I spent the day in bed not feeling ultra great, watching drag race and The Summer I Turned Pretty, and I got some news* that made me very emotional and NO ONE WAS AROUND TO COMMISERATE. Set off the fire alarm making cheese toast, and otherwise just rotted.

* )

Sunday was more of the same, blasting through the show and finishing up my knitting project. Later, just as I was about to get up and make dinner, friends texted that hey, if you want dinner, come by around 7ish... So M and I paused our show (since I'd caught up to her) and headed out for some yummy food and puppy cuddles.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving day so I was home. I started a new knitting project (very slowly), and took a nap. I waited until M was home to finish our show and got to bed VERY late, but it was worth it. It was really good for a show that started out like a cheesy teen romance! (I mean, its still a cheesy teen romance, but I was so invested by the end of it that the emotional payout was, for me, really good.)

My apartment is being invaded by box elder bugs. I don't know from WHERE. I have found 3 or 4 at this point, although they may have been the same two. I know they are harmless and do literally nothing, they are finding a warm place to hide out for winter, but yesterday as I was rolling around in bed in the morning I felt something on my back, reached back and was surprised to find a significant lump in my shirt and sure enough, the little fucker violated the house rules by crawling directly on me. They will be eliminated with extreme prejudice from now on. Calcifer pulled one out of the window on Sunday but watching her interact with the one I found last night, I'm not convinced either cat did anything about it. They are good with spiders and centipedes, but other insects tend to be thoroughly inspected and tortured a bit. So, two confirmed bodies.

Ghost Busted

This is it! We're close to proving bakery hauntings, I can feel it!

Scoff all you like, but I was present at an undersea, unexplained mass sponge migration.

Not to mention they were wearing PANTS.

Look! Actual ectoplasmic residue! This is great!

"He slimed me."

Oh buck up, Frosty, you'll be fine.

Talk about telekinetic activity - look at this mess!

It's like the Salem mass Silly String turbulence of 1947. DEFINITELY supernatural origin.

You know, I collect spores, mold, and fungus...

...but that is just NASTY.

Listen! You smell something?

"There is no 'wee wee,' only stool."

Hm. You'd better get a sample.

What, you question my methods?

Back off, man; I'm a SCIENTIST.

That's better.

Oh, and whatever you do, don't cross the streams. That would be bad.

I can see you're still not convinced on this bakery ghost thing.

Then answer me this: would any human being stack cakes this way?

I rest my case.

Thanks to Anna S., Matthew Z., Alyssa P., Dylan W., Lindsey D., Cynthia C., & Anna A., who are pretty sure that sample cup means "you're in trouble."

Marriage license has been acquired! It was a very quick and easy in-and-out at the Clerk's office, now we just need to wait until next week (technically 72 hours, but by that time M will be in Chicago) for an officiant to sign the bottom and we'll be officially hitched. I spoke to the county Chaplain, and he's more than happy to be our officiant, now it's just a matter of finding some time next week to do it.

Since we only have the one car right now, I had to pick up M at lunch, then he had to drive home, work some, and then pick me back up after work. He always complains that I take too long to get home in the afternoons, but after picking me up today and seeing just how stupid the drivers are downtown and how bad traffic is, he has said he now gets it. XP

Dinner for the adults was cheap burgers from McDonald's, Katie had some potstickers. We played together a bit, and she picked up the word "blue". She's added a few phrases to her vocabulary, namely "I don't know", "I did it", and "I'M NAKED!" which she now proudly declares whenever she takes off her clothes.

Speech therapy today during my lunch break, then the rest of the day should be quiet. M has taken tomorrow off even though his flight isn't until the late evening, so I might get a reprieve from running back and forth to the house, which would be nice because damn my hips hurt all the time now. He has a friend taking him to the airport since it's so late that Kate would definitely need to be in bed.

Looking forward to the long weekend. Have the vague idea of working on some sewing project during that time, but we'll see how things shake out. If nothing else, I'd like to prep a coif that I can embroider during my hospital stay. It was very dull just lying in bed last time and not being able to do anything.

Friday's plans went a bit sideways, in that the marriage license did not happen. I started having a pain in my right side and my feet were a bit swollen, both of which can be signs of preeclampsia, so when I went home for lunch to pick up M, he instead told me that we should go get me checked out. Turned out my blood pressure and all my other numbers were just fine, so crisis averted. Just pregnancy stuff, I guess.

Saturday was Katie's 2nd birthday! We drove out to Weatherford and hit up a pumpkin patch/petting zoo, where she had a great time. There was a big slide that she enjoyed a lot, and she got to see chickens and bunnies and goats for the first time. We had lunch in town afterward, and then headed home because it was HOT and we were all tired.

Sunday was a low-key day for all of us. Katie was pretty subdued, just happy to watch her shows and snack on fruit all day. I think Saturday wore her out a bit, because she was content to just lounge in her chair or cuddle with me on the couch. Which was good, because I was completely wiped out, and so was M. Guess we all got a little too warm at the farm.

Plans for this week are to attempt to get our marriage license today over lunch. Tomorrow is Katie's speech therapy session, then M flies out to Chicago on Wednesday. My sister wants to have lunch on Friday, then the rest of the weekend is quiet until I have to go pick up M on Sunday night.

The "Wonders" (of) Punctuation...

Posted by Jen

Allow me to present a mini educational series on the "wonders" of punctuation.

[Cue the cheesy music!]

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Now remember, boys and girls: Punctuation can be a scary thing, but skipping it all together is never the answer.

Unless you want to command everyone to love their "senoirs."

On the other hand, filling your cake with the wrong punctuation isn't the answer, either.

Ah, a classic case of WTH: "Where's the H?"

Fortunately, punctuation allows us to add an appropriate level of enthusiasm to our greetings:

Pass the tissues. I think Linda is having a moment.

...not to mention convey our "sincerity":

And we mean that, Elizabeth. Like, soooo much.

(Btw, bonus points for the random asterisk. I assume the footnote came on a cupcake? That said, "Not really"?)

Of course, it is possible to go overboard from time to time:

Not to mention that pesky "you're" business.

Yep. Pesky.

And will someone please explain this?

Parentheses? Really? Look, bakers, I'm pretty sure no one has ever - EVER - ordered parentheses on a cake, so why would you even consider...

Ok, so ONE person ordered parentheses on a cake.

That just means you're both wrong.

"Congratulations."

Thanks to Andrea M., Anne G., Anna S., Linda J., Margaret J., Lisa, Kayla H., Debb D., & Bunny B., who I hear enjoy cooking their dogs and their families. So let's eat guys!

Yes, superheroes are united in their quest to protect and serve mankind. And also to look fabulous in a retro cookie-pop bouquet while doing so. Love those graphics!

Now here's a fabulously graphic cake:

I mean "graphic" as in visually effective, by the way, with a sleek and vivid overall design - not graphic as in "you can totally see Hulk's nips."

I think my favorite thing about this cake - aside from the insanely detailed Incredible family with their tiny little Incredible phone - is that this was for a 30-year-old man's birthday. Way to stay young at heart, my friend!

That's all for now! Have a SUPER day, everyone!

The kitchen at work has partially implemented a new menu, and yesterday's lunch was Frito pie. It's hard to mess up a pack of Fritos and canned chili, so it was a pretty good, nostalgic lunch. But apparently it's not something people eat anymore? I overheard a coworker in the dining room educating a bunch of Gen Zers about how to construct a Frito pie, apparently they were just eating the chili on its own and had no clue that it all went together.

It was a mostly quiet day, with a frustrating drive home because the traffic lights were out and everyone suddenly forgets how to drive when that happens. -_-

Kate took a late nap again last night, from 6-7:30, and woke up again in a sad mood. We had many couch cuddles and I turned on her favorite songs, and she was soon better. She went back to bed around 9pm, then M got us a cheap McDonald's dinner and we finished the rest of The Shining before turning in for bed.

Today has already started out busy, and the rest of the day is poised to follow suit. Kate was up at 6:30 because the kitten managed to somehow open the bedroom door and was chasing a hair tie across the room. We brushed our teeth, she ate breakfast, watched a little bit of Ms. Rachel, and then it was back to bed before I had to leave for work. M has a very important, though blessedly short, meeting at 11, and once that is over he's going to drive with me back to work, we're going to do the whole marriage license thing, and then he'll head back home and me back to work. Since he'll have the car, he'll have to pick me up in the afternoon, too.

The next two weeks are going to be stuffed full of appointments and travel. Next week Katie has a speech therapy appointment, then it's M's Chicago trip, then the week after he has his Dallas trip on the same day as another speech therapy appointment (so it'll just be me and Kate that day), an OB appointment/sonogram on Thursday, and Katie's 2-year checkup on Friday. Yeesh!

Tomorrow is Katie's 2nd birthday! We've managed to keep her alive for 2 years, so good job, us. We're planning to take her to a pumpkin patch or petting zoo, then out for dinner at La Madeleine where they have the cheesy pasta she likes. Should be a good day.

Yesterday was a great, chill day mostly at home. I took Susan in to get the perpetually flattening tire dealt with (happened immediately after my near miss on the freeway, so I was pretty sure that as the last tire to get the force of my swerving, it had either come a bit off the rim or the valve was damaged, or something) and the closer it approached 45 mins the better I felt about it being an easy fix, and it was. The seal had come loose, so they remounted and resealed it. All good now!

Home for a few hours while I finished up my cheesy show and made a couple more layouts in the journal. One more week to complete, then some of the "extras". I did end up working on it while at M's place on tuesday night, but not very much.

Haircut is done, and holy cow it's so short and different from anything i've done before. I like it though! I put my bonnet on to sleep and it was nice not having my hair smashed into the back of my head all night. The stylist and I got along great (it's the second time I've seen her so I already knew this) and I'm thrilled. At home I was suddenly EXHAUSTED and took a 90 minute nap oops. Still managed to fall asleep at a reasonable hour.

Tonight M and I are going to see Scream the OG at a local cinema that does these sorts of showings all the time. My period finally started for real so... this is gonna be an interesting night for me lol. Tomorrow I expect I'll be at the other building alone while my body sheds its interiors (but A+ for being ALONE), then a long weekend for Thanksgiving! Even though I'll bet at my friends' place with her doggo, I won't get a lot of SEWING done, I expect, I'll have to check with her how much time I can spend in the basement away from him, but I surely will get a lot of knitting and cross stitch done!
