A lot weirdness going around in society today is about how you treat and communicate with people can really warp what is really the greater good for society in general. Details do matter but the big picture sometimes makes those little details not matter because the communication can get to a common conclusion without strife and anguish and without hurt feelings. Understanding your audience, constituents, friends and associates makes communication better.
Recently I was listening to the series on Tech Stuff Podcast (you can find it on iTunes as well) about the History of Hewlett Packard. The company was founded by two engineers and some of the things they did as a fledgling company on how to run a business were revolutionary in their ideas. Bonus's for jobs well done, health insurance etc. But one of the things they talked about on the podcast was Dave Packard's 11 Simple Rules. They really do rock. I think my favorite is when he speaks about what he calls "small details" which really aren't small. I think the biggest thing about it is that its about respect and the greater good.
Now most of the folks who are reading this know "The Rules". If you are not familiar here are The Rule.
The Rules
Rule #1: Don't Look Like Ass!
Rule #2: Don't make me look like ass! (Me= peer, crown, kingdom, company, coirker, business, crafting group etc)
Rule #3: Don't be THAT guy*!
Rule #4: BE that guy!
Pretty simple those rules...hard to live up to day by day but they are doable and manageable and I think Packard's Rules compliment and expand on the rules really well.
Think of the greater good, respect the people, pay attention to how you act and how you are perceived. Perception is everything. Don't poison the well.
