So I haven't checked or written here since the December 18th. I was done for the year for work but had started the morning with things like getting a crown. It was not painful at the time other than the shots, but afterwards and still I have nerve pain. I think I have damaged nerves on that side and things just ache for weeks. So I've been dealing with that alot. Luckily I didn't need a root canal and I get the permanent crown on the 15th.

Frdiay the 20th I went to Ari's and cut out my dresses. We did dinner at Guadalajara grill and that was most excellent. Best salsa I ever had and we took the leftovers home for mel to make salsa bread. The next 2 weeks were holiday prep, cleaning, cleaning cleaning the house, sewing sewing sewing with breaks for Christmas and New Years. I did make all of the pie crusts for pies and they turned out amazing and did the good puff up in the oven. Mel did wonderful pizzas for Christmas Eve. We had Wander over for that which was absolutely lovely. Shanda brought lots of booze to try. It was a very nice and relaxing christmas. The goose was tasty that Mel and Ari did. We had mashed potatoes I made from roasted potatoes and green bean casserole. All of which turned out lovely.

We did small gifts this year minus me buying Mel his new beer fridge and him buying me my new serger. We spent more on the serger (babylock Celebrate) than I wanted but I'm replacing a hand-me-down machine from 1981 and this will last me the rest of my sewing life. So meh. The fridge is a SMEG knock off from Home Depot. Its bright red. The wine fridge we had went to Poe for her she-shed. The beer fridge went with Linnet. So more stuff out of my house.

Benton's room got completely emptied, cleaned and rearranged. And I found a nice second hand dresser to add to the room that fit in his closet so its not a dumping ground of stuff. Shanda also drove down a new to us bookcase that while it barely fit to get into the room is perfect and we got rid of a POS. We will be getting more from her stock of bookcases and from here adoptive father's estate to replace the crappy ones in the family room.

Cool things I got for xmas: books I've been wanting, a ryobi battery light/magnifier, rose jewelry from Ari, Legos from the hucks, a new matt for rolling out dough, meisen plas items, booze, an awesome bag of a RBF cat knitting that states "Easily distracted by Cats and Yarn from Ed/Asa, a dish towel that says "I'm really not the kind of person you want to put on speaker without a warning", pretty amythyst earrings from Shanda, a scent diffuser setup from her as well, yarn from the co-op in Minnesota, silver napkin rings, a castiron basting pot for the grill, a silver julep spoon.

But the new serger made things perfect. I was able to keep the silk brocade from shedding, the linen was perfect to work with and I'm again so happy I have a good steam iron. Cutting necklines is always a PITA but Ari said I needed to do a mockup and wow did that help since I had a double facing and it was good to know what went to what side. I still had to fix the back neckline a bit but meh. All good. I think the over dress turned our perfect and the under was simple but I added just a thin piece of trim and its really pretty. Becca helped me get the hem finished and the sleeve cuff buttons/loops done. My brain was not braining by the time we got to the vigil.

But can I just state that 1) my house looks amazing, 2)Mel is a rockstar and worked his ass off with Benton on his room, moving shit, pulling stuff off of the porch etc. 3) he hid a surprise for my elevation. The household did amazing. Tym and Rob, Mel and the boys all helped too to get things ready. The setup was magical in our secret porch, The boys finished up the path from the shop to the trees with bricks and then put in a pathway marker through the side yard.

We had about 40 people attend which was nice. It good to chat with folks and listen to them doing the "where are we going?" on the hidden path. Having this vigil really helped with my imposter syndrome and do I deserve this. I got gifts too which I was not expecting. Herveus sent pelicans with Megan. Lageartha made me a pelican. Sym gave me a John Wick coin since we have a Baba Yaga schtick for my ceremony. I tucked that into my bra for the event as good luck.

We had a very nice time at the vigil. The boys got a good chunk of the left over firewood burned. Mel ran his butt off with smoked salmon, chicken, sausages and the most amazing challah braided ring ever. Poe's meringues were amazing. Dominique made chicken teriyaki and veggie skewers (and then she kicked ass and ran the kitchen crew at the event without being asked). I made tasty banana bread that was devoured. Dom made tasty beer and I will admit I had a hangover the next morning, lol. But we rolled with things and got to site just after opening. Since we had seated hats visiting we brought the household loner chairs. Things were a bit chaotic and our household grabbed some tables to sit outside for the feast. But first was court which I will right about tomorrow.

This weekend was supposed to be deck the halls around the house inside and out and do some crafting and we only got the tree up and the lights on it. But....the family room chair that the bottom was falling out of has now been repaired and I got to test my setup of my sewing table setup from when we installed the TV. It worked perfectly.

So the chair...we bought the mustard color chair and couch back when we got the other big couch at a consignment/resale shop for like 275$ total for the pair. We figured they were from the 60s-early 70s due to the color of teh fabric but they were in really good condition and super comfy. That was years ago now and the bottom of the chair broke out and what we figured was an easy repair turned into a bit more complicated but I didn't have have to send it out to be fixed. It wasn't too hard but it took time and one trip to the fabric store for supplies since I did not have upholstery stuff in my stash. The cool thing we figured out was the chairs got recovered in the 60s-70s but are really from around the the 30s since the internals are mahogany. so the upholstery burlap from then is not what we get now. But I bought some brown canvas duck cloth and an upholstery chenille which I found in the cheap remnants at Joanns.
I got home with my finds, setup the gate leg sewing table under my tv and cut out fabric and covered the old fabric where it went over the metal frame. I sandwiched the old between the chenille and the duck. The duck would be facing the springs. I realize now I should have put a layer of padding there but oh well it didn't have it to start with and lasted 30-40 years. Anyhoo...I got the bottom piece done and then mel used an awl to get the holes for the springs and it took us both to pull things into place to set. I then sewed the outside springs to the pad I made to keep them from wandering too much. I didn't do the center springs because I could not find my curved needles but I think it will be fine. I think put the canvas duck on the bottom to close everything up and used period tacks and a tack hammer to make it work. The previous items were this nasty weird fabric that was gross and dying and they stapled on. Yuck...staples. Ugh. So tacks are better. I only had one weird pucker on one edge but yanno it was my first time doing any of this. I'm happy that I've watched enough Repair Shop on BBC and Baumgardner Restoration to have an idea of what to do. So achievement unlocked.

For the before, in progress, and after:

Mel and I also replaced my broken overhead light and that was easy until we put in a new switch and blew it up. Oops. The wiring in that junction box has too many wires and was too stuff and I think the ground hit the box poorly. So, its nice and brite and works when I turn it on so that is good.

So that whole chair project took me all afternoon and then to after dinner. After that Benton and I drug out the xmas tree. Which is when the grief hit for a bit. I pulled out mom's little light up xmas tree that my step sister had got her in the hospital back in December 2021. Oof that hit hard and I had to stop for a second and I shoved it back in the closet. Benton asked what it was and I told him and he asked if he could put it in his room. Which honestly, is okay. That helped a lot with my feelings but I feel that grief is going to keep bitch slapping me in weird ways coming up. Ugh. I wish it wouldn't but this is what it is. So, we got the tree up and the star on and Sunday we put the lights on. I let Benton stay up since we were watching Muppet Christmas Carol while we did the tree. But after Benton went to bed and Mel was already in bed by like 8pm. His sinus ick was still bothering him and his back hurt from something...probably coughing. he got up at like 10pm to shower and back to bed with his bourbon. I was twitchy and there was a text convo that had me swirling mentally. So I finally got in the shower at 1130 and then stayed up until 1am. I tried out my new LUS regime for my hair.

Sunday got up and moving late but not too bad. Got going, mel was still asleep when I left for the street fair. Picked Ari up and we got good parking where I nailed my parallel parking on the first try. The timing was right for people and things and we got a bit down the way before Chef Brian's Comfort Kitchen called to us to have chicken and waffles. OMG so good. We ate and chatted and got some sun and then moved through the fair. We had folks to shop for and it was a gorgeous day and having street beers to shop with was nice. We ran into Anya, Robert (thier kids) and Golda as we were done a few hours later. We shopped and needed coffee on the way home. We got Dutch Bros. which while not my fave is still better and friendlier than charbucks...though you can't get straight coffee.

Dropped Ari off and then headed home. Ankle was sore but not overly so and rested a bit when I got home before making dinner. After dinner Benton and I got the lights wrangled and then I tried to kitten proof the cord by wrapping it in velcro strapping the entire length to the switch and then placing the kitten cave on top of that under the tree. I did take the best photo of Spicy that I will probably use as our holiday card. Still trying to figure out how to write a blurb about the last few years...its daunting and I don't want to gloss over it but ugh. I probably had too much to drink but was comfy last night. I spun for a while to relax and hit to bed.

3 work days and I'm free for the rest of the year and I'm already got a fuzzy brain. Sighs.

Books: I finished #40 Down on the Farm and and about 50% done with #41 which is The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: 2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious.

Its been a minute since I updated. oops. But we had the week of crazy at work before the Thanksgiving holiday. We traveled to Seattle early on Saturday the 18th, waited for the BIL/SIL to get in. I had rental car shenanigans that i had to deal with but we got all 7 of us loaded into the suburban. Can I say how much I hate not being able to rent through National for work anymore? We have to use Avis and they just suck. Anyhoo, we got out of seattle, grabbed lunch for the South Carolina family and then wound our way up through mountain passes into the high desert that is NE Washington State. We got in just at dinner time which was nice. Momma Ellen looked really good and we had a nice evening of chatting and getting things organized for what we needed to do in the morning for food shopping etc. We meal planned for the week. We spent the week doing things around the house for Mom. Well Mel and Rob did. I cooked a lot and crafted on mel's socks...though I never finished one. It was seriously in a time loop of knitting. I was not sleeping well most of the week and then got a bad asthma cough. Which resulted in me getting a chest issue when we got back. But we had a nice visit. did a bit of antiquing on our way back.

So the rental car had all of the bells and whistles but the main system for the electronics kept glitching and I couldn't use the onboard nav or the sound system. We had a ceiling piece come off on my nehpew from the middle third row seatbelt well and there was a piece of trim in the back that would not go down. I dropped folks off at the hotel at the airport and then went to return the rental car. It was about 20F and windy with the sea chill in the air. I got the car into the return line but pulled all the way to the front so they would have to deal with me first. I talked with the manager and explained and showed him the issues. They rebated me 110$ off the rental which was really nice. still a PITA to deal with. Then I had the fun of getting bussed to the airport, then I had to weave my way through the under construction section, to a skybridge, through a light rail station and finally out into the street to walk to my hotel a block down. It was chilly. I had my hat, half gloves and my thermal shirt but I was super chilled when I arrived at out table for dinner. We had adjoining rooms with the family so that was nice as well all cycled through showers and good byes. They had to get up at 4am to catch their flight.

SEA-TAC had their shit in a sock and you ahd to go down an escalator and then up stairs to get into the line for the security. Oh, well but once we got to security it went pretty quickly. Benton's backpack got pulled for a bag of rocks. Lol. But all good. We got to our gate and then I foraged for food. Benton wwanted subway for breakfast. Sighs. But I got that and coffees and some local cheese stick for mel. Mel went back and got a small cooler of cheese from Beechers Cheese. Our flight was good. I slept for most of it and that was also good as breathing sucked.

But we all managed to relax and get ready for Monday. I was beat...my blood ox was hovering around 92. I took it easy for the next few days and felt better. Did not go into work but Wednesday night Mel started coming down with something... Not my thing..I have no head congestion just the cough and some phlegm that Mucinex helps with. Benton has also had the same thing as mel but not so bad. He's been tired and snuffly but able to stay awake etc. Mel has has momemts of sleep. Spicy has been very happy to have snuggly humans and has been snuggling under blankets at times. I've had some bouts with insomnia and been up with her snuggling my feet on the couch. Insomnia is keeping me stressing about things with my mother's estate. The probate has brought up things we thought were handled and then they canceled her 401k at work and I had to scramble to get that sorted and moved to an inherited IRA at a different place. I hate the fact that my mother's generation was to have money ferreted away in way too many places and I have to track it all and I'd love to have it all in one place but isn't a possibility. Additionally, she had stocks in 2 different ethanol plants and I'm now the owner of shares and oof. For a woman who bitched and scrimped about money she sure had it handled. Sighs. Grumble...flail. Ugh. and inherited IRAs suck cause I have to dispense with them by 10 years from her date of death. That is a lot of paperwork to deal with. Sighs and that is not including the land issue. sighs.

Anyhoo...I've done a bit of reading and knitting.

For reading I finally finished #36 The Enchantress which was meh. I finished it cause I was curious but not curious enough to read the next 4 books.

#37 was The Innocent Sleep by Seanan McGuire

#38 was Hell Bent by Devon Monk

I will start #39 tonight which is Lore Olympus #5. I will see what I will read after that. I have new T. Kingfisher, an other series to start and yeah. We shall see what is my fancy.

The ankle has been stiff and aggravated by my good tennis shoes. Anything that touches or rubs against the ankle at the point to attach the tendon it gets irritated. I need to research to find out what the heck.

I dressed up as corp goth with my pumpkin/black cat dress, duster sweater, Boo Headband and my eyeball necklace. It was stressful day at work and I was super grouch by the end. The weather was windy on my way to and from work and I was so drained when I walked into the door. Mel gladly went to the party at Mary and Andrews while I stayed home to watch tv and hand out candy to the total of 5 trick or treaters we had. I watched ghost hunters and played on my phone and snuggled with Spicy. Benton and Mel had a good time. Benton was happy to have his shark onesie since it was Tucson Chilly with the wind.

My brain is not happy...I'm not sure what I can do about it right now. I'm feeling just uncaring about a lot of things. I was dreaming aobut all of the land issues with the northern property and the change in weather and the excessive wind has my allergies/sinuses flared. I thought the weekend of relaxing would help my brain but I dunno. Probably residual stress I dunno.

Gonna hit PT tonight and then hit the pot luck at knit night. Should be a good time. Hopefully that will get me out of my funk a bit. I do want to finish that darn hat.

My last post was at the beginning of my last week of work. The week was okay and I ended the evening with a nice happy hour at Borderlands Brewing Company. Got to meet a lot of the EE team and paid for their dinners as thank you. That Saturday I did the 12 Days of Xmas workout and made it through day 8 and felt good. Then after a lovely shower I went to Dom and Willa's and rolled up my character for our one shot Call of Cthulhu game for New Years Eve. We visted mom on sunday and got to sit outside in the sun with Mom and she enjoyed being there and kept asking for us to escort her to her car so she could drive home. We went with it and just kept her comfy. It was hard for Benton to see her like that and us too. I made the effort to work on the quilt for mom and taking things easy. With Help from Mel I got things lined up and rebacked. I hand tied each section and to the fabric and cotton thread at quilt basket which was nice to visit and support local. They are a very nice shop and super friendly. The hand tying took me a few days of a few hours of work per day. hands get tired. I was trying to get things done before Christmas but knew at that point it wasn't going to get done and she wouldn't be awake enough to see it or appreciate it. It was set aside with the binding cut but not attached.

Shanda was home with us from Thursday through Christmas day. It was nice to have her there and just catching up. We were very low key. I grilled steaks and sweet potatoes for Christmas Eve dinner and Mel made waffles for breakfast Christmas morning. Wander joined us for Christmas eve dinner and Christmas dinner. Willa, Erika and Dom visted during the middle of gifts. We had a wonderful time. Shanda loved the charcuterie board and puzzle table cover we got her. Mel loved his new flint napped obsidian knife and Benton loved the Switch mom got him. We had a few more days of presents arriving which was nice from the Hucks since we all just ran out of time.

Mom was pretty not responsive when we saw her on Monday but Tuesday (the 20th) she perked up and asked for a cheeseburger and soda which we brought her. the order number was most of her birthday date. She had a few bites of burger but had a few sodas. I could tell as could the hospice nurse that she wasn't really swallowing the items correctly. I could tell this was her rally and she was cracking jokes etc. Benton got to see his Grandma lively like she used to be. This was good since after that she really did not eat or do anything else. We visited every day and she was weaker and weaker. They upped her dosage of lorazepam and morphine to help keep her comfortable. She barely woke for us on Christmas and on Boxing Day she didn't wake up at all when we visited. The girls had set up her room so nicely and put her angels near her. I told her she could go when ever she wanted. When we got home we got the call. They checked on her about 10 mins after we left and she was gone. I guess she listened to me that she could go. Before that we told her she could go home anytime she wanted. I guess the wording mattered. I was relieved and sad at the same time. It was hard. We cleaned out her room on Tuesday with the help of Ed. That was nice to have help even though it wasn't a lot of things. Her clothes minus a few things that went to Ari all went to Goodwill. Her other stuff I still have 1 small crate to go through and will probably box most of that up to take back to her house like my Grandmother's bible and her angels.

I'm still trying to process things in my head and I have a list of things I need to do for her like planning the memorial that just sit. I get to pick up the death certifications today which will allow me to do some of the financial things but I have a lot of I don't want to. But I need to. I took an extra few days of PTO and came back on the 9th, I will use my 3 days of bereavement leave when we go to the funeral at a date to be determined. But yeah. the week after things I slept a lot. Mel said my stress response was valid and that not wanting to do anything, even working on the quilt was hard. about a week later I got some gumption and got the binding done and fixed and stitching that had come apart after 70 years. And then I had a brain blitz and its the only project my mind can think about is to do another quilt block and then embroider the dates of who did what on it and attach it to the back of the quilt. It seems like a good thing and I think its part of my grieving process that has tangible results versus phone calls and property.

I finished books #42 and 43 before 2022 ended and then finished up the 44th book in reading a few days into the new year. That was Calculated Risks on the 3rd. I started teh first full book of 2023 is Spelunking Through Hell by Seanan McGuire. I'm now caught up on the Incryptid novels and awaiting the next book in March. I'm still in the same universe but I'm now reading the Ghost Roads offshoot series where the first book is Sparrow Hill Road.

One bright side of the holiday on the last few days before we went back to work we got new bikes. Its something we've been wanting for a while and it had been 7 years since I road. But it was good. We've done some small rides to get back into gear and I'm very happy with my Giant. I also was able to game for the first time in forever. I got dressed up in my fancy silk dress and did my hair all debonair 20s and had a great time rolling dice and killing off a thing from the great beyond at a fancy New Years party in NOLA. I played a debutante with a fliar for books and guns. I may have induldged in good booze too much and was picked up and I put myself to bed at like 830 but I woke up to the fireworks and gunshots at midnight to get more food and water. Jan 1st we went to Bisbee with Ari to antique and she found a nice bed for her guest room. It was a nice trip and we had a good time getting out of the house sans kiddos. The boys stayed at our place playing video games.

So a jumbled update but its mostly all there. I'm barely thinking about War of the Phoenix and I will worry about that after I finish planning the memorial and when we will be gone. I think I can think about it then. Multitasking just makes me stressed out.
ianuk: (drinking)
With the last post I was heading towards the holiday and trying to be prepared. I was freaking out and trying to do a lot ahead to not be crazy but my brain was having fritzes where I just couldn't begin. But I took Wednesday off and I turned my anxiety into productivity with a list and things and got it done. I only had the green bean casserole to finish on Thursday...Mel had the turkey going finally but it was a weird morning cause the smoker refused to go to high and he had to replace the regulator and that was good. We still had to finish it off in the roaster but it was tasty and good. Luckily he was feeling better after being death warmed over. Ari came over early which was nice for my sanity. We got things settled and then mom blew up my phone...I think she thought we forgot her. She forgot that we had agreed at 1pm...she was hounding at noon. I had to explain that in the SW versus the midwest we arrive on time or 5 minutes past...not 30 mins early. But I got her picked up and we had a really nice meal. Benton was off...he was feeling overwhelmed and not social. I get that. He had some food and then retreated to his room to read. Its okay.

Mom was really alert and we had a nice time. She only stayed about 3 hours which was okay but I would have liked longer but I think she was worried if she had to go to the bathroom that she would have an accident like she had before. I don't know it was odd. Got her home and then came back to have drinks and relax truly for the first time in a week. Btw all of the food was perfect. All of my pies jelled and were tasty. Put Smith&Cross Rum in the Peach, Cherry Herring in the Cherry, the pumpkin was divine and DF, and the dutch apple I did I wasn't sure was going to turn out but it was perfect. I used Sugar Bee apples for the first time and they were nice and sweet but still firm when baked. Mel didn't remember we used to put booze in the whipped cream and he did it this time and loved it.

We had Thyra nd Ruhdhan in the evening for driveby chatting and food. They hadn't done a meal that day due to many things and we were quite happy to provide food and drinks. It was nice to have a 'tea' session and chat and see where things were at and then swamp styles. It was a nice evening.

Friday I got up early and went to the gym. Making it my 3rd time at the gym that week. We were having a post Turkey day HIIT session at 9am. I was a tidge early and then Keith and I realized that we didn't have anyone else. No one else showed up. No one else. which means I had the hardest HIIT session. But I did it. I burned almost 700 calories. I was so shaky on the way home. I got home, had a nice shower and then headed to my massage...expect I was an hour early...so I dinked around Ross and Petco and got some things for the holidays and what I needed. Massage was excellent and worked out all of the tightness from my morning exertions. Jesse and Jen came down for Friday afternoon and evening and we had a nice time.

Saturday we slept in a bit and I was trying to finish the 39th Book of the year and I did that. Then I picked up Mom and had her come over to 'help' wrap presents. The boys went to the lumberyard and Ace. Mom was very spacy during things. She thought we were doing lunch. So I fed her. I'm worried she's just not eating unless she really really likes something. If there is chicken in anything she refuses. Sighs.
But she was so confused on Saturday and kept asking the same question (where are we going to breakfast on Sunday) and we answered every time. Sighs. The boys were playing Grounded and I read into the evening. IT was nice.

Sunday we had breakfast with Mom and she was much more alert and cognitive. Still asked where we were going for breakfast. We went to Biscuits which was new to all of us. They were a bit patriotic for my taste but the food was excellent. Benton ordered pineapple upside down pancakes and wow those looked good. They put buttermilk pancake stuff on the griddle, toss in some cherries and pinapple, coat that in brown sugar and then flip. OMG. Mom had her usual bacon, eggs and pancakes. She didn't eat a lot but made a good dent. I had the huevos rancheros and their green sauce was AMAZING.I should have not gotten them Christmas...green all the way. It was a nice time and we dropped mom off. I relaxed a bit at home and then ran some errands to pedicure, the grocer, big lots and checked out a cycle shop. We are planning on getting bikes again and now is the fact finding missions. It was nice to just bum around with a real need. I restocked xmas paper and bags which was needed for future wrapping. I had bought a new paper organizer and finally used it and it is semi-hard sided so it stands nicely in storage.

The rest of Sunday was relaxing and hanging with Mel watching Wednesday. OMG it is so good. Like brilliant casting all around. Wonderful visuals and Danny Elfman wrote a wonderful score. We are at the last episode which will hold to watch until Wednesday. Seriously fun.

I'm now reading #40 for the year which is Tricks for Free from Seanan McGuire. This is the 7th book is in the Incryptid series and its been super interesting. Her world building is always amazing and its a fun mystery. I have 4 more books in the series until I'm caught up and that is a good chunk to get me to the 50 mark or close to it.

Monday was work and the gym and my brain is kinda quiet. I'm not too stressed. Getting more physical exercise has helped with the brain I think. And yes I know its supposed to and that is the point of getting my butt in gear but I've also been lowering my alcohol intake...not restricting per se but not having a lot when I do. So small steps forward are okay.

Project fronts....lol. I'm kinda meh. I need to plan some more simple clothes for war and outfit the boy who has my broad shoulders. But yeah. I still have socks on the needles for mel and half gloves for my self. But that is the week recap.
ianuk: (baroness)
I had 3 weeks off and would have preferred another and I could have taken it but....yeah. It took me a full 2 weeks to "shut off" and come down and relax into things. The lead up to Christmas was easy minus a bit of weird with pie crust. Mel decided to make homemade and I couldn't get it to work. I ran to the store on Christmas eve to get things we missed and pie crust. While I was out he redid the crust and it just needed more moisture since we live in a desert. It was just fine with rehydration. Lesson Learned. My pies turned out great. We had peach, cherry and rhubarb.

We had a socially distance visit with Shanda for Christmas. She got in about when we got up. I made the french toast casserole from Binging with Babish and it was perfect. Seriously good. Will be doing it again. It did not hurt that mel made cranberry swirl bread for it and that was perfect. It was good to see her for a few hours...damned Covid.

I had big plans for over the vacation and then my back decided it didn't like the fact I spent a weekend reading and refused to work. Its my stoopid hip muscles being assholes and I've been trying to stretch etc but I only got like 2 walks in the whole time and no gym time. But I did read a lot of fic since it was the finale for a Stucky collab and there were a lot of 100k+ word fics. Seriously Good stories. So I lost time to that. Mel played lots of video games and I knit a 2020 Dumpster fire ornament and cast on a new shawl with yarn mel got me.

My CC project took a detour after I finished up all of the seams and tried it on and realized I inset the sleeves too high...6 hours of taking things apart later and I was back to sewing it all again. But now its almost done. I need to finish the sleeve ends and bind the hem. But its rather pretty.

Usually I look at my old journal entries to see what my goals were and the beginning of last year was....not great...so I didn't make any. This year I hope I get my love for a few things back (read SCA clothes) and I've been itching to work on a few wayward projects. I have two commissions I need to do/finish. I need to just sit and do them but that will be after the CCC is done on January 31st. I have to make at least the over dress and maybe the coat...we shall see.

I managed to make 1 huge blanket, 1 stuffy, 1 hat, 1 cowl, a 2020 dumpster fire ornament, 1 shawl and I painted 6-7 scrolls painted. compared to 2019 I only did 5 knitting/crochet projects so I compelted one more and I don't know how many scrolls I did in 2019. I could look I guess but I just know last year was a shit show but I did manage to read 45 books a millions of words of fanfic So I did something.
ianuk: (evil)
Its chilly in the old Pueblo this AM with a 32F but feels like 27F out there. I stayed in bed for a bit, Mel stayed in bed for a bit. The boy was unhappy with getting up and I have no idea why they didn't just have class today versus their normal Wednesday homework day versus having the kids have a full day tomorrow. *headdesk* Then its holiday break for them.

I managed to get to the gym after 3 weeks off and I felt really good about it. I need to remember during vacation to get out for walks to keep moving and keep the pounds off. I'm a little fluffy right now but have been trying to be better about eating and keeping up with my water. Getting back to the gym will help with a lot of things in my head too. I thought I was gone for a month but 3 weeks is close I guess. But it was good to do.

Started on my Dumpster Fire 2020, see the pattern listing here DumpsterFire by Kino Knits
Its fun and I think the kit I got will make probably 3 of them.

Got an email from work that my Service Anniversary Package is inbound. Yeah, 20 years in January...wth? Where did the time go? 20 years...holy crap. Guess that grey hair means something. But today is the last day of my 2020 work year. So good to finally be here. Ugh. I can't wait to sleep in tomorrow and have time to veg and work on knitting and sewing and maybe some other things. Like making fruit cake.

Well, when last I wrote we were planning on going to SD for Thanksgiving. We did not do this. Things are so bad with the virus and SD is one of the worst states at that time. Things are even worse now due to people getting together for the holiday. Mom and I were sad but its way safer.

We had a very quiet thankgsgiving at home. I only made 3 pies and I delivered food to Ari so she had good noms. We did a nice turkey and some salmon. Green beans, grilled sweet potatoes, sweet rolls, and the best stuffing I've ever made. Seriously. We used herbed bread mel had made as the croutons. It was so good.

On the craft front I've had a bit of enuii but I did manage to get my shift done. I still have my underdress to finish..its together but I need to sit and pleat it. The hand finishing has been triggering my tendonitis and I've not beem feeling great overall. The weather change gets to my sinuses badly.

Work has been...special. I've had to give large presentations for a new proposal to my new director who is back east due to the merger. Its been a big learning experience and frightening as well. Talking casually about millions of dollars just freaks me the eff out. But its going okay. I have 8 working days left in the year. Ugh. But I've made some progress on some career goals for a cert I've been working too.

The girls turned 2 over Thanksgiving and that is so surprising. It doesn't seem like we've had them a bit over a year and a half but they are.. they are enjoying having the weather cooler. We did get the furnace fixed and that has been nice. The house is now reasonable. My studio is still too chilly but I have a space heater.

The boys got the xmas lego train up and have been putting up a lego xmas building kit from last year. It takes up the entire piano and that is okay.

I felt very pretty for my big presentation and tried out new lipstick:

So, we are at crunch time with getting things done for Coronation.  I'm no where near started on clothes...my own fault and and ennui seriously.  I've had no brain power in the evenings and Benton has been bouncing around at bedtime so I don't want to disturb him sewing.  Sighs.  Mostly its me an making excuses...So yesterday I cleaned my house.  Seriously.  Washed floors and everything.  Now most people would have poo-poo'd that but I felt guilty that I couldn't create things without there being space and well, I've still been washing fabric for the reign...omg..so much fabric.  So the house is clean and tomorrow night I can sit down at my sewing machine and get mel's pants sewn and then write up his pants pattern to then hand off things to [personal profile] lferion .  I'm going to hand her the fabric tonight so when I send her the patterns its not too bad.  Just need to buckle down and do things.

What is funny is I found a class handout that I made in 2007 about how to be productive...here is what it said:

Ianuk's How to Stay Organized/Plan for SCA Projects
In no particular order

·     Make a To-Do list for every deadline

·     Give yourself plenty of time to do something

o  Figure out the steps involved and their timeline

o  Then add 3 weeks

·     Do all of the mundane tasks around the house before starting so you don't feel guilty

·     List out what you need to do (step by step)for each project as a guide

·     Make sure you have all of your supplies before hand

·     Clean up your work area when you are done

o  this makes things not a mess

o  if you don't get back to things right away its less messy

·     Leave yourself notes with the projects or on fabric etc of what you need to do with it.

·     Plan on what day and time you will work on some thing so you don't get distracted and you can plan other activities around your project(s).

·     Stick to your schedule, don't get sidetracked.

·     Realize you won't get it all done.

The funny part is do your mundane cleaning. Mel's comment was that I finished my estrella cleaning and I'm like...no! I did all of the Estrella stuff weeks ago..just cause you put it back into the trailer (finally) is not my fault...I did the cleaning. Lol.  But maybe he's right...you do need a bit of time off between things.  Work has been eating my time and I just finished up a big leadership class which has been homework during the week and classes on my off Fridays.  I just need to follow my schedule...so this week is:

Monday Night - Scribble
Hand off fabric to wander
Hand off fabric and patterns to Willa
Get Willa my idea on my Queen's Graces.
Tuesday:
Sew mel's pants
Rework pants pattern for handoff
Wednesday:
Iron fabric for Thursday Cutting of my underdress and over dress
Thursday:
Cut out my under dress and over dress

So, that is the plan...I just need to execute.

The weekend was busy cleaning and celebrating Benton's Bday (some more). He turned 7 on Wednesday during his Spring Break and we had a small cake and dinner out where we met Ari and the kids on accident.  Saturday was his party and we found him a bike on Friday that fit him well.  There are videos in the flickr album.

Well, Christmas and New Years was really nice. I had my surgery and while I'm still recovering I still enjoyed things for the holidays and slept a lot. I also got a cold and that didn't help either. Sighs. We had my MIL here and that was wonderful and Shanda was here for a few days and that was awesome.

So when we last left my poor journal I was recovering from a cold and worked my last week of work. I spent that weekend cleaning and getting things setup for xmas since I was going to be laid up a bit. I will admit that being home for 2 days by myself was handy since I had the quiet to do my thing. I also had the Craftvent shawl to work on in between things and that was good too. Tuesday the 19th I had lunch with Mel's coworkers at Mamma Louisa's and then I went home for final prep before taking a Lyft to my operation. I was very surprised I got to ride in a Tesla Model S. It was swanky.

The surgery was okay. They had me on a lidocaine pump which was neat and I was very sore when done but I really didn't feel anything except in a few spots where they pumped me full of lidocaine some more. Got cleaned up and bandaged up and Mel was there to pick me up. We had to stop on the way out to get a bandaid for a stitch I had at the top of my left thigh...it was going to catch on everything. I was bandaged for a few days and Thursday night the bandages had slipped an bunched behind my knee that I could not sleep and the vicodin made me feel weird (face numbness) so I called the doc in the AM to see if I could take them off earlier than my appt that afternoon. Luckily Wander was there to help me since things were bloody and stuck to sutures and I hadn't really looked at the damage and it was hard to move etc. Then came the best and hardest shower of my life. The one after Benny was much easier. I had to sit down for this one and slowly scrub over the sutures. The sharpie marks from the surgeon took a week or so to come off. AFter that I was just in compression thigh highs for a week and then moved to only compression knee socks and now I'm doing pretty good. The legs are weirdly stiff, especially the one they ablated the vein in. It pulls something fierce and I have to keep getting up and walking...oh noes...more walking. :) They took the sutures out the afternoon I took the bandages off which was nice.

After that it was into holiday things pretty much full swing just at a much more slow rate than I normally do. That was okay. I needed to take things easy and Shanda helped me get lasagna done and pies. Mel and his mom had fun shopping and doing things and Benton was super excited to have folks there and presents and the like. Unfortunately, just as we finished the holiday Mel and Ellen got bad colds and Benton was lethargic with a kinda cold too. I knit on my shawl, watch MacGuyer (original series) and dinked around for like a week. All good. I finished the shawl and blocked it ready to wear.

Over New Years I worked on banners with the household and we got new furniture for the front room. The IKEA table went to Ari's and we got a 1915 mahogany gateleg table and then a side 1950s Danish Modern to use when we needed big space. We had a lot of folks who do not have linen banners for themselves and we needed to teach the method and we have this great big porch and well, we did banners. I had given everyone homework and well...only one person really did that but it all worked out in the end. New Years night there was painting, good dinner, light saber fights and then watching Spiderman Homecoming with a bunch of people. I painted more banners and we had a nice week with Ellen before Ben and us went back to work and school.

Work has been busy and all of the SCA stuff is getting busy again too. The weekend before we came back was Kingdom 12th Night and Benton was awarded his Lion's Pride. The tail is uber cute.

Leg Surgery Kinda Graphic?!

Yeah, things slowing down at the end of the year? Who am I kidding.....well, since I last posted here we've had Southern Crusades, Thanksgiving Break in South Dakota, Ben's Holiday Concert, way too many scrolls needed and my leg surgery is Friday. oof.

Also during that time I think I've determined that I'm going to take part in the Knitmore Girls "Grinchalong" which is basically...don't make holiday gifts from Dec 1 thru December 24th. The only thing I was going to make is socks for mel and I can do that after the holiday. Plus I want my MIL to pick our fabric for her dress I'm going to make her and we can start sewing after the holidays. So, there...grinchalong engaged!

So, Southern Crusades happened and it was weird and good. Weird since it was at the Estrella site, weird that I was there for setup and Mel wasn't...he had training and was picking up all of the kids. But I got to pull out the big camera and take pictures and that was nice.

Click the picture to be taken to the album:

Got done with that and a short bit of work and then it was teh weekend again. I stayed home from A&S for lots of reasons...mainly to just be home for once and I had to get my haircut so that was also good.

We left 2 days later for South Dakota with my Mom. That was good...much better than last year..not as much drama though we had some plumbing issues that mom got fixed after we left. We got her a new tv for xmas since the old one was 23 years old and fuzzy. We got her a Vizio 1080p 40" LED and got that setup. I had to fix the wire issues from the folks who did their surround sound 15 years ago. What an utter mess. But it works and I only had to run to town once for longer cables since we put things on a swivel extendable mount. Mom is now hookedup with netflix etc. Click the link below to see the album...I'm still editing photos.

Thanksgiving 2017 Album

In all of the travel mel's phone and laptop decided to basically die. The phone would only sometimes charge but we finally got him settled this weekend with a new one. I also got a replacement ipad and he's still figuring out what he wants for a laptop. We shall see.

So I only have 7 days left working for the year. Ugh..so much to do but I'm taking time for myself and knitting for me! Thus Grinchalong. I am doing the Jimmy Beans Wool Craftvent thing where you get an advent calenar with yarn, notions etc and you make a shawl by Xmas Eve. So far I'm on track. With my surgery on friday for varicose vein removal I should be good to sit and get through the day 8 knitting. I'm also making progress on my long lingering daybreak shawl. I also have the Old shale Shawl .

Plus I have my Halloween Socks to finish as well. Sighs. Lots for me to finihs.
ianuk: (caw!)
I will be back dating some info as time permits buts my holiday was okay. We had a lazy and busy time. It was very weird. The entire family was sleeping in till at least 8am...sometimes later the entire break. Ben is growing and eating all of the time which was good but we learned not too much sugar otherwise he's a grump monster in the AM. We went roller skating with [profile] scribe_ari and the kids. Ben did great on his new from Santa skates and it was fun. Definitely need to do it some more soon. We hit the zoo and in general had a nice time.

Mel and I are almost finished watching all of Gravity Falls on Hulu.

On the making things front I made:
1) a cowl for [profile] public_shaylan
Untitled

2) Caution Orange sock for Mel, I still need to finish the second one but its at the heel gusset.
Untitled

3) Finished the minecraft creeper hat for Benton and Viktor
Untitled

4) Got the hot head torch on and made beads with [personal profile] swordmage as a gift for Wolfgrim's wife Jess which we made into a Viking Festoon.
Untitled
Untitled

5) Worked on a baby gift for little Cora Jade which I hope to finish this week/weekend.

We also managed to get new to us furniture. So in the way of last January we reorganized where we reorganized the front room. This time we reorganized the family room and the bedroom. We had intended to buy bedroom stuff but managed to buy stuff for the family room. We moved out the big dresser and the futon and the purple couch. We replaced them with a 1930s armoire, a new Ashley couch and a new to us vintage 1960s custom sofa and chair.

So this has spurred a reorganization trend and I've been throwing things out in the KonMori style and folding things small and making things better. Yay!

Well, the holiday has come and gone and work has begun anew for the new year.

2015 was a struggle on many fronts. Many good things happened but I'm looking forward to the new year to get things resettled for myself. Take care of me and mine plus get back to happy and less stress. So in December I finished:

1)Knit Cowl for my mom
Untitled
Untitled

2) A Knit shawl for my MIL (her handspun and some alpaca/wool/silk)
Untitled
Untitled

3) Two crochet cowls (for [livejournal.com profile] scribe_ari and [livejournal.com profile] public_shaylan)
Untitled
Untitled

4) A Knitted/felted Hedgehog for [livejournal.com profile] lferion
Untitled

5) Plied some TdF2015 yarn
305 Yards
Untitled

6) Made pie, lots of meals for the holidays, lasagna, homemade cheese (won the taste competition) and more pots of coffee than I care to think about.

I also enjoyed time home with my family. I even enjoyed cleaning and starting the purge of stuff. My MIL went home with pants that don't fit me any longer and I'm not holding on to them until they do. My SCA stuff and stash will be next. Purge and organization of the house is our theme for the first part of 2016. We will be getting the roof re done, getting a wall and a new patio door and in general making our home more livable and comfortable.

I'm still working on Mel's xmas socks. I'm at the toe on one and hope to cast on the other one this weekend. I also cast on a shawl for myself that is stuck right now...I need to fix it and I have some spinning on the wheel too. I think evenings will be project orientated once again and weekends will be sewing. I need to update everything in my SCA wardrobe and Mel and Benton need more things as well. Time to look less scruffy.

I managed to finish book #10 (Hell Bent) and #11 (Stone Cold) by Devon Monk and started #12 which is House Immortal also by Devon Monk.  Its an alternate world or post apocolyptic (maybe?) USA.  Still trying to figure it out.  Its interesting though....

I finished my "No Bunnies" Shawl and blocked it last night.  Yay!

Cats like shawls.

Halloween was tiring but fun.  Ben and I carved a pumpkin, he is not a fan of the guts and we headed out with Ed/Candace (Holly & Henry), Mary/Andrew (Inara) and had a good ol' time going around Civano.  We had no trick or treaters at the house.  But a good time was had by all.

IMG_9144
IMG_9161

Sunday Ben was grumpy and tired and we all were.  I spent way too much time shopping but oh well.

Monday I worked and then gave a STEM talk about Mechanical Engineering to a group of Middle School Girls.  I was a bit nervous about doing it but it went really well when I could tie in showing them hardware that linked into the rockets they've been working with and have some hands on show n tell with hardware I had with me.  Plus some youtube of my products doing their thing.  It was good.  One of the neat questions I got was "How many tests I failed".  I was only an average student.  I failed a few courses and "D" for done on a few but I'm still a good engineer. I had a social life in school and am really well rounded. I stress the technical/social communication/presentation skills over the math and science becuase when you work in business you need to be able to talk to a wide variety of disciplines and backgrounds.

Monday Night was lots of calligraphy to get ready for Coronation.  Me being off a week didn't help.  My business trip for next week was cancelled though so that makes Southern a bit better to handle. I still have lots to do.

I attended the YWCA Women's Conference yesterday.  I got to hear Dr. Nancy Bray, Head of the Kennedy Spaceport for NASA speak and attended 3 workshops and a luncheon where we got to hear from the 2015 Changemaker of the year Dr. Laura Banks-Reed and Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron.  Pics of my work ladies are here:

2015 YWCA Women's Conference Tucson

What the conference taught me was I'm pretty much slacking on my career.  Which I've been feeling.  There are many folks my age who are much, much further along and I'm frustrated enough with things I'm almost thinking drastic action of switching departments or leaving the company.  I hit basically tenure in January and no longer acrue any further PTO per year etc.  That would be a lot to let go of and I get a pension so, yeah. Don't want to loose that but it tempting.  So, changing things a bit now and going to work for 2016 to be a transformative year for me.  I need to follow Rule #1 at work and my goal is to dress nicer and look nicer in general.
ianuk: (here's looking at you)
Well, when last I posted we were getting ready for the xmas holiday. It has since passed and we are looking right at the start of the new year. Seriously, how does almost 2 weeks pass so quickly? The holiday was quiet and relaxing. We had no melt downs from little boys, everyone was happy with gifts, we ate really well and had time with family and friends.

It was a Skylander's Xmas with the whole family getting some for various versions of the game. I also got given Disney Infinity which has all of the Disney and Marvel characters you can think of....so much fun but hard to play when you are tired. The world building is intense. We figured out quickly that Minecraft makes me sea sick and I won't be playing an of that probably. Which is sad, I was actually looking forward to that. We had [livejournal.com profile] public_shaylan with us for a few days and it was so nice.

Over the last two weeks I've also went to the Tucson drawing studio with [livejournal.com profile] elinor_dear and [livejournal.com profile] bewilde for Live Model drawing on Sunday mornings. I was very, very nervous for the first session, it was really the first time I've ever drawing anything that was real and not just a copy from a book or the internet. It was intimidating and 3 hours is a long time to be drawing but it has been good. They start out with 5 5 minute poses of the model, a 15 min pose, a 30 min pose followed by 45 minute pose and then a pose with what ever time is left. There are breaks between the longer poses for us and the model to stretch relax etc.

There was marked improvement from last week to this week. It really helped that we got there early and were able to get a much better angle so we were in, as Bridget calls it, "Foreshortening Hell."

cut for NSFW )

The model we had this last time was wonderful and so striking in features. During the 45 min pose I couldn't get her head right (pin heads suck) and just moved to another sheet to do a study of her face. Her features were so striking its like she walked out of a stone carving from the Aztecs.

In other new things I've done. I published my first fan fiction. Its in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and yeah, I'm pretty proud of it. I've got a few more in the works including one that hit me today that I'll see if I can get out there.

A Proper Drink It was not possible without much love and editing by [livejournal.com profile] ickaimp and [livejournal.com profile] lferion.

So Sunday was nice and then I just got cold...could not get warm and well I was sick with sinus uck. Today I'm tired and ran some errands but still tired. Not quite fit for human interactions but on the mend I think. I don't think my eating habits are helping and just need to stop the crap and eat good stuff and drink my effing tea and water like a good girl.

2015 will hopefully bring lots of good changes to me. My goal is to make myself better and treat myself better. I've been letting work decide on that too much and well, I need to do things for myself.
ianuk: (here's looking at you)
The weekend before the holiday was quiet but Mel is still sick. We had a bit of respite on that but his crud is now back with a vengeance.

Ben is still being trying. But we've made one potty training advances. He's not taken a nap in over a week and today was craptastic with his behavior. Sighs. I hope they can manage him at daycare on Monday. I need a break.

Xmas itself was good. Had family and friends over for a nice relaxing time. Got lots of nice things and was delighted to see that my shopping choices were excellent.

Just a bit down due to my parenting fails of late and my lack of anger management or even my lack of making things. Have lots to do and not doing any of it cause I feel like crap. Luckily I pulled my head out of a fandom since I read everything now and can get back on trak.

Did get a bike ride in and I did do that 5k. Will blog more with pictures etc soon.
ianuk: (here's looking at you)
I've been meaning to get back to the journal just after Christmas but oh well. Here we are. I have to say this holiday was really relaxing and not too stressful. Everyone liked the gifts and even though we got doubles of a few things the new receivers really enjoyed things which was a big bonus. Just teaches me to not buy things off my own wish list. Eh.

So Benton did really good and only melted down after everything was over and it was nap time. He really, really liked his wagon and just grins like a maniac when he gets to ride in it. Mel really likes his new sign for above the shop door which says "PRIMITIVE - Step Back in Time" which I thought was uber appropriate for him and for the shop. Shaylan loved the hat, Bryan loved the cowl and OMG! [livejournal.com profile] scribe_ari made me the most beautiful shawl! It was a sock and mini-fig day though and I got 9 pairs of socks smart wool and Leigh Made and lots of Lego Minifigs.

We had really good primerib roast for dinner and pies were had as well. Were sad to see Shaylan and Bryan go home but working the next day does suck. I have not been getting to running and have been having too much beer and sugar...oh well. We have been having a good time with the boy and I've been working on a pair of socks for mel. I got one done and the second is on its way but it won't be done tonight.

I spent a good chunk of today getting my studio ready to actually make stuff in it. The Yarn Harlot has this thing where she cleans her house so it is good in the new year. My house is pretty good right now so I thought the last room that has been the dumping ground would get hit and I really did a good job. I can even, with a bit of clearing of the worktable do glass. Which is a big thing for me. I and [livejournal.com profile] swordmage need to be working on beads. Plus its time...its been almost 3 years since I made any beads and that is sad.

We are home this evening and I think its going to be a fire, some knitting and some warmed mead with Mel. Quiet and home and that is okay. We've been pretty social the last few weeks and its nice to stay home and have quiet.

2012 was pretty odd. I didn't accomplish much of anything on my goals for the year...I started a few but didn't really get far. Most of my time has been work and Benton and I think I'm finally starting to get the stride back to make things, take care of myself and still be Mom to an almost two year old.

I hope that 2013 brings me so good things and lets me accomplish personal things...but really, that is up to me to do. I'm going to be a bit selfish the first few months though and get things done for me. Hit the gym hard and get going on the running. Got lots to accomplish for me.
ianuk: (crow)
Wednesday I left work around noon, ran some errands and then put pies in the oven in between working on paperwork. By the time mel was home with Benton the house was smelling nice and they got some time in the shop to play. Had Ari over later that night for our own internal stitch and bitch. Mel got the bird ready and we had a nice night...really, nice.

Thursday we slept in a bit and got the Turkey on. Mel took Benton out to the shop and I proceeded to make stuffing, sweet potatoes, baked brie and green been casserole. I was on my feet for most of the morning and by the time everything was done I had to get back up from the couch and get things heated for the dinner. Oh, well. No rest for the wicked. We had Elinor, Ari and Mariyah for dinner and then later we had Wander over for pie. So good. We had pumpkin, apple crumble, ginger macadamia nut, custard and key lime. I also made a blueberry but that had accidentally got given to the girls at joes with their key lime pie. Eh, all okay though. The evening ended with sharing a beloved movie with Wander and lots of knitting/crafting going on. So good.

Friday Ari and I headed out for lunch/pedis and a trip to Grandma's. It was SCA day there with lots of folks having stopped by before we were there and during. It was nice. Saturday mel had a brewing day and I got a hair cut. Benton was acting kinda not normal. Sunday morning he was an uber crab and we ended up giving him tylenol for his teeth. I then took him by stroller to joe's for breakfast while mel relaxed on the couch. Got back and he was feeling much better and I got to working on some projects. I had to frog a lot of things the day before.

All in all it was a good weekend but I so could have used one more day to clean house etc. Oh, well. Monday night it was uber small scribble and I did not feel like sketching so I worked on some crochet. Tuesday mel went to Oklahoma and I got the boy taken care of and then put my feet up and started in on Cold Days.

So books so far:
#21 - Turn Coat
#22 - Gulliver's Travels
#23 - Proven Guilty
#24 - White Night
#25 - Side Jobs
#26 - Cold Days (in progress).
