[livejournal.com profile] scribe_ari has over the last few years come up with a technique to paint linen for banners. Period sources are not pointing to painted silk banners as most of us in the SCA think. I've done lots of silk banners and its a neat technique but the end product does not seem to last a long as we have found out.

So with not enough time available I desperately needed to make a least Ivan a new banner. We ended up getting that started on Sunday and also with the help of the house hold we got Mariyah's banner together as well.

On the technique side its interesting. Its similar to the resist methods in silk but linen acts differently than silk with how much it soaks up. I had some bleed over due to having things too wet which in the silk dyes it just evaporates...with linen it just flows over the resist. Which is lame. Also, I'm not sure yet how to do the awesome shading I was able to do on the silk. I'm sure I will have to do more banners to get the hang of it. Its just hard to work on things in a time crunch. My own fault really, the summer just flew by. I'll post more about the technique when Ari gives me permission.
