The last two weeks...
Nov. 6th, 2013 09:09 amWell, the last few weeks have been busy. I think I will show off things in pictures for ease. We have been so busy its all been a blur of too little sleep, lots of creativity and learning and work a lot.
Our Anniversary - Mel and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with a nummy dinner at Chef Alisah’s and then beers at Dragoon Brewery. I had gotten us a smarmy anniversary gift of keychains. They are made out of pennies with 1996 (the year we started dating), 2003 with M<3J (the year we were married), 2011 with a hand and a B( for when Benton was born) and then a copper disk of “Lucky Us”.

After the enjoyment of our anniversary we buckled down for projects for coronation. I and
swordmage had been slaving away on clothes for coronation, she did almost all of my seam finishing and put the trim on my underdress.
lferion had cut out and machine sewn mel’s and I had cut out mine and sewn some of it before doing necklines. I was using Dame Angele’s neckline handout for the first time and after doing an okay job of it on my under dress I had plans for the stuff on mel’s. We had some inspiration from pinterest and I went with it. For mel’s here are the images:

To do all of that, I managed to learn to make my own continuous strip, double fold bias tape. I used this tutorial:
How to make continunous bias tape
Its awesome. I bought the little metal tool to help with the pressing and with the quilting notions being 50% off I was uber happy to have yards and yards of edging. I also did a Wander trick of binding the edges versus doing the flip the facing method that Dame Angele does. Both have good results but I was running short on time and this was so much easier. I also learned how to do a blind hem stitch to put the silk facing inside of Mel’s handwoven wool. It looks so pretty when the buttons are undone. You can’t even tell I did a full square facing on the garment from the outside..thus the blind hem worked!

The other project I had been working on was the Lion. In Atenveldt, once per reign the King can select the person whose “behavior He feels shows the highest ideals and values of the Current Middle Ages”. You can see the full text here at Lions of Atenveldt Award Charter. Its super-secret and its almost always the last piece of business for a stepping down court. People try to figure out who it will be. With us Laureling
msshoshana and then then Southern Scriptorium working on both Imma’s Laurel and my county there wasn’t enough people to go around to do the scroll so about 3 months go we decided that I would do it. But time and ran away from me. I again hit pinterest for some inspiration.

The scroll was for Blossom. Its personalized for her with her armory and my husbands on the shield. It has red lion since we are Rus and red is good. The helmet being grasped in the teeth of the lion is the BTY Great Helm and the plate on top of his head carries items like Blossom carries a plate with nummies during water bearing. The little shrunken head came about when she was sitting there watching me sketch the darn thing at scriptorium and I had the armory covered. She asked what was going to be on the plate and I stated I wasn’t sure yet but knew the book from the original wasn’t right for the recipient. She suggested the head of John the Baptist which is a very common element on plates in medieval paintings so I said…”yes! I’ll have to figure out how to draw that!” I had Poe draw the food and the head since I was completely blown by the time I figured out the rest of it. I painted two Mondays on it and then had to get down to the wire and finish the painting on Friday before coronation but I got it done and was uber happy with it.
Halloween also happened during the week we were staying up way too late sewing. Mel was a champ and sewed on trim while I worked on my clothes. On Mondays of the week Mel and Benton had gone grocery shopping and he’d picked out a big pumpkin (he says “punkin!”) for carving. I got home on Wednesday and they had cleaned out the pumpkin and I got to drawing faces on paper and had Benton pick out which one he wanted. He picked a “scary one” so I drew it up and carved it in pretty quick order.

So that brings us to stepping down at coronation. The morning of was a disaster. Benton woke up way too early after going to bed way too late after dinner at Jeff’s Pub in Chandler. Love the Friday night Walleye fry and the cheese curds. I ended up getting him up and heading to the store with Benton in his jammies and me looking like death warmed over in a sleep rumpled t-shirt and messy hair. Got us a few things we needed and then hit Sonic for breakfast goods and then got back to the Kevin’s for getting mel up and moving and the truck repacked. Got to site about 30 minutes later than I had planned and things were a bit crazy and my memory was just not keying in on what needed to get done when but it all worked out. We had some issues with scrolls that got solved but things got signed and we all got dressed and ready to go only about 45mins later than I wanted court to start. Kisses do make things go better and we were lined up to walk into our first court and we finally got our first kiss of the day. There is a fuzzy photo of us walking into court that we are smiling from ear to ear. In my previous post I listed all of the awards but I wanted to go through things a bit to remember how we did things.
Imma’s laurelling started with some schtick with Oslaf who had earlier in the reign stolen some trim my MIL had woven for her son to wear during his reign. She is awesome and conspired with my husband to have more of that trim made but Ivan started the ceremony with a “how much do you love something to steal it from your King!” It was hilarious and it got Imma to relax into her ceremony. We then followed with well deserving awards to Bam-Bam who has been fighting for 20 years and didn’t have any fighting awards from the Kingdom and to Eleanor for a Fluer for all of her fiber teaching and inspiration. We also gave Mariyah an equestrian award. She seriously is a fabulous horsewoman and needed to be recognized. We surprised Ryu with an AOA. He’s doing good and making a name for himself.
We then got into all of the thank yous for our court. The LIW got hand cast spindles, the guards got hand cast thor’s hammers. The Brigade got pampering stuff and a hand colored note from Benton. Each of the guards came and presented me with a rose of some fashion. It was so unexpected that I almost cried. Some beautiful items were gifted to me including a huge glass rose, a rose painted box, copper rose veil pins and an amber carved rose pendant set in silver and with silver and amber beads. Wow.
Our main court got personalized gifties. The heralds got take apart stools from Ivan.
I gave back the queen’s white scarves in a newly painted box by Icka to the white scarves and that was a bittersweet moment for me. I’m so glad I had them at my side and that I had good fighting with all of them during the reign.
The sygils and cyphers went out and we surprised Tym with a court baronetcy with his as well and then we got to do the other secret squirrel project which was punking Wander and Ari.
Seriously, how do you do that to your Abacus Herald (precedence and awards) and to the Kingdom Scribe? Well, you have to be sneaky and get the help from heralds and from scribes so you give them, Wander and Ari) an Augmentation of Arms. Since an augmentation has to be passed by the college of heralds we penciled in their blazons but Wander got a Blue rose to go diagonal from her triskele and Ari got a quill in her griffin’s hand. The scrolls were by Dame Jennifer and the heraldy bits were done by Magdalen and Tym. Yay!!!

Then followed the Knighting which was awesome and heartfelt. The buffet knocked Thaddeus pretty good and I’m glad my dear husband did not do as requested and actually punch him. It would have broken the poor man’s jaw and knocked him out. He was pretty stunned from the open hand strike. Folks don’t realize that Mel is a 3rd degree black belt in Kung Fu.
Ivan then got to hand out the Lion and the cheer that went up was fabulous! Blossom was crying and it was great. I should have used my veil for her tears in proper fashion but I just handed her a handkerchief.

We recessed court and headed back to the ready room to relax, eat and get ready for the transition. We got back on track to court and opened up with a few words and then Morgan came in with his entourage. The entirety of court members of our household had been popping in to tell us that “the mead hall is growing cold”, “the mead and mustard are gone!”, “The fuzzy ball of hate won’t let us in the studio and the shepherd ran off!” and we ended with us wanting to go home. We transitioned the crown to Morgan and we got our coats on (from coronation) and put our Hrafn cloaks on and walked out.

Then came the change up. We quickly got changed into Landsknecht for our counties. When we stepped down from being B&B and got our Thegn/Bannethegn we came out in full heraldic 14th Century since we hadn’t had our own arms for 3 years. We decided to do something similar for our Counties but appear in German. It was a crazy plan and it was all executed by Greta and Wander and some last minute help from Violante. ( Read more... )
His county scroll was made by Mistress Grainne the Red and my Scroll was made by Ari, Shoshanna, Bridget and Icka. Our county coronets were made by Duke Arthur and are based on Rus patterns of bracelets and carvings. The girls realized that when they opened the box with Ivan’s county that Grainne threw down the gauntlet and Ari got her muses screaming at her to do something absolutely crazy. I have been in love with the Annunciation by Simone Martin since I saw it in an installation at the Getty way back in 2004 or so. I call it the “WTF? Annunciation” because Mary looks down right pissed off about being told she was going to be the mother of God. The angel’s wings are faboo and he has a fluttering plaid sash which is awesome! Well, the scroll knocked it out of the park. I’ll have a photo album of them detailing how they made it later cause damn!
Well, that was it…the end of the reign and I spent Sunday doing not much of anything…which was a good thing. We have Southern Crusades this week and I'm looking forward to doing nothing but crafts, watching Benton and maybe a bit of fighting as well as taking my first apprentice.
